1921 il I am now sending you enclosed herewith the full text of our reply note. 1 I am also enclosing the memorandum of Mr. Kánya about a conversation he had on January 6 with Prince Castagneto. 2 As appears from this memorandum, the Italian Government expressed its willingness to mediate between Austria and Hungary in the conflict concerning Western Hungary. The acceptance of this offer of the Italian Government might offend the French Government. However, I came to the conclusion that I cannot reject this offer of mediation, as you will see from the enclosed aide-memoire prepared for Prince Castagneto. 3 Incidentally, Prince Castagneto requested and promised the greatest secrecy. The above is communicated for your information with the suggestion that should the question arise you need not conceal the fact that you are informed, but you should not on your own initiative raise the issue. 4 No. 42. 35/res. pol. Notes of the unofficial Representative of the Hungarian Government, Count Szapáry, concerning various conversations held with a view to a rapprochement between Hungary and Czecho-Slovakia. [TRANSLATION] BUDAPEST, January, 1921. 5 At the end of November, 1920, I received an invitation, through Dr. Scheu, to a soirée given by Dr. Boucek, one of the most distinguished lawyers in Prague, an intimate friend of President Masaryk, who drew up the Czecho-Slovak constitution. 1 Infra, Doc. No. 44. 3 Supra, Doc. No. 40. 2 Supra, Doc. No. 11. 4 Cf. irfra, Doc. No. 73. 0 The original document in the archives of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs does not bear a precise date. The notes seem to have been prepared during January, 1921, and were perhaps handed over to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Count Teleki, on or after January 13, 1921, the date on which Count Szapáry returned to Hungary to report on the steps he had taken. (Cf. supra, Doc. No. 31.). The document was recorded in the archives on January 22, 1921.
