214 1920 Hungarian officials. These expelled people have recently arrived at Szeged in a most pitiable condition and bereft of all means. It is being rumoured that the Belgrade Government have, among other things, the intention of expelling a great number of Hungarian officials by making them transfer their residence to Hungary if they do not choose to become subjects of the Serb-CroatSlovene kingdom. Those who fearing the consequences of expulsion remain in office, will, according to intimation bearing upon this matter, be transferred to Bosnia or Albania. The object of this game is quite plain: removing Hungarian officials, and replacing them by such of Slav descent. The Royal Hungarian Governmerent regret to find themselves in the painful position of having to object, and in a most resolute manner, to such inhumane actions, which tend to expose hundreds of innocent people to most cruel misery. These banished people will most certainly try to reach Budapest, where they will be only aggravating the already very critical housing conditions, and will be increasing the prevailing difficulties of the food situation. At this point I may observe that the steps adopted by the Belgrade Government are not at all in keeping with their reiterated declaration of wishing to entertain friendly relations with Hungary. Trusting that in considering the foregoing statement you will appreciate my views, I take the liberty of asking you to exercise your influence that the vexations from which Hungarian officials in occupied territories are suffering, shall cease.
