A menekültkérdés szerepe Résumé The Role of the Refugee Problem in the Progress of the Regime Change in the GDR. Analysis Based on Historical Diplomatic Data The central thesis of this study is that the refugee problem played a crucial role during the regime change of the German Democratic Republic. This thesis is presented and explained based on historical diplomatic data. In particular, the cooperation among the state security services is analysed to understand better the reasons behind the increasing number of East German refugees who tried to flee to the West through the Hungarian section of the Iron Curtain during the 1980s. The article also reviews examples of escapes to the West German embassies and explains the dilemma of the East German regime change in this context. The origin of this dilemma was that the GDR could not follow the example of the radical reforms carried out in other socialist countries at the end of the 1980s, because these reforms would have led to the dissolution of the GDR itself. The refugees who fled to the West through Hungary or escaped to the West German embassies, brought pressure, directly or indirectly, to the political leaders of the GDR. In the end, the deferred reforms resulted in the unexpected fall of the Berlin Wall and led to the sudden collapse of the regime during the autumn of 1989. 2014. tél 137
