Referendums in the United Kingdom

The British legislation mentions only three cases, which the referendum is required with: before Northern Ireland's secession from the United Kingdom, before setting up England's own National Assembly or Parliament, finally, in the case of the National Assembly of Wales delegates additional legislative authority. The European Union Act is also an important step towards the consolidate of the institution of referendum; however, this provision requires referendum only in connection with EU affairs (development of new or edit existing competencies, changes in the liabilities of the UK) - the compulsory referendum undermines even the parliamentary sovereignty this way. To decide what change is significant enough to put to a referendum is depending on the requirements contained in the Act and on the deliberation of the Parliament.
