Résumé On the Road towards the European Union - Moldova, the "Best Pupil" of the Eastern Partnership Ahead of the European Union's approaching Eastern Partnership (EaP) summit in Vilnius in November 2013, this paper provides an overview about the current situation of Moldova and the recent developments in the country's foreign policy. In recent years, Moldova has become the top reformer, the "best pupil" of the EU's Eastern Partnership policy, which aims at bringing the Eastern partners closer to the Union by engaging them in reform processes hopefully leading to sustainable democratisation and transit to market economy, and offering association. Eiowever, indices and the recent internal political turmoil highlighted that the most needed administrative, judiciary and law enforcement reforms still have not been implemented, corruption is still running high, and the overall picture painted about Moldova in the European Union is nicer than the reality on the ground. Nonetheless, the government maintained its determination to go ahead with the association agenda and it finished negotiations on its Association Agreement, which is now ready to be initialled in Vilnius. Seeing this progress, Russia is putting increasing political and economic pressure on Moldova to hamper its rapprochement to the EU and to keep it in its zone of influence. The paper concludes that while the Moldovan elite definitely needs to continue reforms in the areas in question to continue on the European path, against Russia's pressure more commitment is needed also from the EU to keep Moldova on track. 40 Külügyi Szemle
