Migration, Urbanization - the "Politics-Free" Processes of Globalization On the eve of the Arab Spring, Arab societies may have presented a relatively static picture of themselves. It seemed that the theoretical debates of the 1990's and 2000's, and the profound changes in the international system have left the Arab world untouched, or, at least, have not induced it to move, in spite of the fact that these external developments started profound and deep-running process and influenced already existing ones. In fact, the Arab world reflects the globally existing developments, but its local characteristics are reinterpreting these, and their relative balance shows a direction and state of development markedly different from that of the West. Globalization, in which modernization is a very important element, is as much characteristic of the Arab world as the "renaissance of identities", in which nationalism and Islam, and their relationship, are the determinant factors. The globally relevant social processes and institutions (migration, urbanization, the demographic explosion, public education, the state and its security forces, etc) are further enriching - sometimes in very different ways - the picture we may get of the Arab world. 84 Külügyi Szemle
