Résumé Defining Factors in the Foreign Policy of a Middle-Sized European Power at the Dawn of the 21st Century In the first half of the 16th century Spain established a vast empire by gaining territories across the globe. However, during the centuries that followed the country gradually lost its standing due to both domestic and international reasons. During the 19th century Spain had to give up its overseas territories one by one. For the most part of the 20th century Spain played only a secondary role in global power struggles. After the fall of Franco's dictatorial regime, however, even if having to contend with the effects of unfavourable world economic trends for a period of time, it found itself in a new situation. From the mid-1980s, as a member of the organizations of European and Euro-Atlantic integration, Spain became a significant actor in the global economy and in international politics over the course of 25 years. For the first time in centuries the country was able to significantly expand its international influence. Although the 2008 financial crisis has affected Spain deeply, it has so far not jeopardized its recently acquired standing. 34 Külügyi Szemle
