Bevezetés. A magyar-spanyol diplomáciai kapcsolatok történetéhez Résumé The Evolution of Spanish-Hungarian Diplomatic Relations: An Overview With the help of Spanish and Hungarian archival materials, the author examines the relations of the two countries in the 20th century. Based on the dynamics of bilateral diplomacy, the paper distinguishes three principal phases of Spanish-Hungarian relations. The first phase, extending to the interwar era and the Second World War, is examined from the point of view of the international conflict generated by the Spanish Civil War, but the author also reviews the important measures Francoist diplomacy carried out in the protection of Hungarian Jews at the end of 1944. The second part of the paper deals with the somewhat unorthodox relations during the first phase of the Cold War: the two governments, of opposing ideological camps, maintained no official relations, but the Hungarian Royal Legation kept functioning in Madrid (1948-1969), while in Budapest, the Spanish Republican government-in-exile established a short-lived embassy (1946-50). The author also examines the strain the Hungarian revolution of 1956 placed on relations, and analyzes in detail the subsequent gradual and prudent mutual rapprochement of the 1960s. The third phase of Spanish-Hungarian relations was inaugurated in 1977 by the official reestablishment of diplomatic relations. Before 1990, the socialist Hungarian governments laid down the institutional foundations of bilateral cooperation, which have since been expanded and diversified by the subsequent democratic governments. The paper concludes with a chronology of official state visits. 2010. ősz 13
