Résumé Central Europe through the Lenses of Hungarian Foreign Policy The concept of Central Europe has undergone significant changes since it appeared in the international political and intellectual discourse in the beginning of the 19th century. The region, a heterogeneous group of countries and nations lying between the German and the Russian speaking parts of Europe, was originally identified in relation to the great powers (the Habsburg Empire, Germany, Russia) seeking dominance over this geographically rather unspecified area. After the Second World War the very idea of Central Europe seemed to be extinct only to be revived in the eighties by gaining new political interpretation implying those countries under Soviet rule which, referring to their Western cultural self76 Külügyi Szemle
