Résumé Ágnes Tolnai: The Australian-Asian relations Since World War II 'Geographical position in place of historical ties?' could also be the title of the study what examine the changing attitudes of Australian foreign policy. Asia becomes a more and more important and powerful region of the world both economic and political means. Australia focuses on these emerging countries more than a decade ago. Does geographical position becomes more important than traditional Anglo-Celtic historical ties? Or as cultural and social connections getting stronger through multicultural policy economic and political relations enlarging? We cannot say simply 'yes' or 'no" for these questions without looking at the foreign policy of the Menzies, the Whitlam, the Hawke, the Keating Governments, and especially the present Howard Government. As we can see, economic needs, growing Asian migration, creation of multicultural policy and environment, and the end of the Cold War also important factors in forming Australia's foreign policy toward Asia. But after 11 September a new factor, fighting against all forms of terrorism, creating a secure environment within and out of the country became more important than ever. For this reason the aim of Australia is to create stronger economic and political relations with Asia providing more effective economic development and more secure regional environment. 152 Külügyi Szemle
