Résumé South Korea: The Conflicts in Party Politics and the Division of the Peninsula The South Korean public life has been bipolar since the 1960s. There are basically historical, geographical, and generational fault lines in the background of this division. In contrast to the northern part of the peninsula, the Japanese collaborationists were not held accountable in the southern part, and it became a basic conflict of the South Korean society. Then, these families even got into the government with General Park Chung- hee's military coup d'état in 1961. Moreover, the major figures of the right-wing military dictatorship which dominated the 1960s and the 1970s, as well as the family enterprises which were interested in the export-oriented economic development program all come from Kyungsang province, which is the richest region of the country. However, the representatives who were seen as the intellectual leaders of the students's mass demonstrations against the military dictatorship came from Chulla-Nam province, which is regarded to be one of the poorest regions of the country. Nevertheless, the deepest fault line has emerged in the relationship with the northern brethren country. The essay discusses the political fault lines in the country which itself was a border of a global fault line for decades. The study also aims at presenting the new phenomena which are emerging along the conflicts of party politics: the left-of-center government, which is in power for a second term in a traditionally right-wing political environment, as well as the growing importance of women in a society which reveres the Confucian roots.
