Résumé British Security Policy Since 1945 The Second World War changed the security environment of the United Kingdom drastically. London was unable to guarantee the security of the British Isles and the overseas territories which belonged to the kingdom on its own after 1945. Western European security depended on NATO, while global security on the U.S. military, though it was first and foremost the American nuclear capabilities that meant the deterrence in the Alliance as well. The British made, and are making, great efforts in the interest of developing independent defense capabilities and force projection too. The security policies of the United Kingdon in the past fifty years can be divided into the following four periods: 1) From 1945 to the 1970s, when London's major goal was to acquire an independent nuclear deterrence force; 2) from the 1970s to the early 1990s, when the British strategic thinkers gradually expanded the concept of security beyond the military aspect, mostly under the influence of the so-called Helsinki process; 3) from the early 1990s to September 11th, 2001, when the interpretation of security was further expanding to include new topics and locations (international migration, environmental degradation, Africa, etc.); and 4) since September 11th, 2001 the greatest challenges to British security have been international terrorism, the proliferation of WMD, the existence of the so-called rogue and failed states, and the synergy of these elements. Fünfzig Jahre der britischen Sicherheitspolitik Die sicherheitspolitische Lage des Vereinigten Königreichs wurde grundlegend durch den II. Weltkrieg verändert. Nach 1945 konnte London allein die Sicherheit der britischen Inseln und der zum Königreich gehörenden Uberseegebiete nicht mehr garantieren. Die europäische Sicherheit wurde von dem Nordatlantikpakt, während in globalem Maße durch die Streitkraft der Vereinigten Staaten gewährleistet, obwohl die amerikanische nukleäre Kraft - praktisch gesehen - auch im Nordatlantikpakt die größte abschreckende Kraft bedeutete. Die Briten machen und machten ungeheure Anstrengungen im Interesse der selbständigen Verteidigung, sogar der globalen militärischen Teilnahme. Die britische Sicherheitspolitik des letzten halben Jahrhunderts lässt sich in folgende Perioden teilen: 1. / von 1945 bis 1970, als London gewaltige Anstrengungen machte, um die selbständige nukleäre Schlagkraft zu erschaffen, 2. / von 1970 bis zum Anfang der 1990-er Jahre, als die Briten den Begriff der Sicherheit - durch den Helsinkier Prozess angeregt - stufenweise über das militärische Element hinaus ausdehnten, 226 Külügyi Szemle
