the growth and consolidation of economic independence, which must serve as the basis1 of political independence, and the end of economic backwardness are all impossible without the use of modern technologies, the source of these technologies on the other hand, as far as the developing countries are concerned, are the very imperialist capitalist great powers, and the great multinational monopolies, which are interested in maintaining a state of economic dependence in the region. Views differ on what can be done in the way of economic cooperation within the framework of ECOWAS. The rate and direction of development of this agreement that is most important from the world economic point of view as well still remains undecided. VIII
