As Your Highness may have seen Lord Halifax made it clear in a speech at Edinburgh on October 24th that His Majesty's Government recognise that means can be found, in peaceful negotiation, to give effect to them. I enclose the relevant extract. I appreciate that difficulties have already arisen and may still arise during these negotiations, but it has been and still is our hope that the two Governments most directly concerned may be able, with good will, patience and moderation on both sides, to reach a direct agreement. Finally, I should like to say that, if at any time you feel that my good offices could be of service, I shall of course be very glad to do what lies in my power to help, in concert with the other parties to the Munich agreement, in reaching a solution of Hungary's claims such as will form the basis of an equitable settlement. Monsieur le Ministre, En réponse à la Note No 152.470/11. —1/1938. en date du 28 octobre courant, j'ai d'ordre de mon Gouvernement l'honneur de porter à la connaissance de Votre Excellence que le Gouvernement Royal de Hongrie s'est déjà adressé aux Grandes Puissances intéressées avec la prière de se charger de l'arbitrage. Il saurait gré au Gouvernement de la République Tchécoslovaque s'il voulait bien le faire également dans les 24 heures qu'il propose. Le Gouvernement Royal de Hongrie réserve son attitude ultérieure, jusqu'à l'arrivée de la réponse des Grandes Puissances concernant l'acceptation de l'arbitrage. Veuillez etc . . . 9 A magyar kormány jegyzékét, mely válasz volt a csehszlovák kormány október 28-i jegyzékére (lásd e kötet 602. sz. iratát) Wettstein prágai magyar követ október 29-én 12 óra 45 perckor átadta Chvalkovsky külügyminiszternek. A külügyminiszter —- jelenti Wettstein — annak tartalmát tudomásul vette azzal, hogy a csehszlovák kormány még aznap meg fogja tenni Rómában és Berlinben a magyar kormány által javasolt lépéseket.
