Ecclesiastical carreer-possibilities in the milieu of the Bethlen family Abstract Biographies of reformed/Calvinist ecclesiastic persons (school-masters, priests, college professors) from the 17 t h to the 19 t h centuries appear in the historiography of ecclesiastic/church education as a part of the monography of this institution. It is not known until nowadays that an intensive analysis focused on the problematic of ecclesiastic career from the end of the era of principality until the end of the enlightenment period. This work is a comprehensive study, trying to present this problem through those ecclesiastic persons, who during all their life had different contacts with the members of the noble Bethlen family. An exhaustive analysis of the biographies of these people tries to find answers to the following questions: which are the essential moments of an ecclesiastic career, how the selection is organized, what is the origin of the future ecclesiastic, do the personal relationships influence the process of selection. The examined elite of church world it was limited only to the milieu of the Bethlen family, this one including a wide enough domain in order to offer information for general conclusions. The investigated area includes the domain of the family from Küküllő and Felső-Fehér comitats and Udvarhely chair. These areas were part of reformed dioceses of Küküllő and Udvarhely. The study presents in chronological order those moments, which influenced the career of youngsters who decided to choose the ecclesiastic life. Ihere are presented exhaustively those possibilities, which were offered to young men in order to get a chance to contact the members of Bethlen family. Ihese possibilities included: getting a stipend, the institution of legation or could be culminated with a commitment at the court of family as a school-master or priest. A lot of examples can also be found, when the Bethlen family offered financial assistance to youngsters during the period of West-European study pilgrimage. The financial aid for study trip could be reached through perseverance, hard work or by persuasion of the sponsor. A particular case is represented by the Csávási Vas family, a family which appears as a feudal tenant at the Bethlen estate at Csávás and Dányán. During the investigated period not less than 15 descendants of this family succeeded to become school-masters, priests or even deans, all of them being previously servants of the Bethlen family. 23
