Gepidic settlement-traces in the northern region of the abandoned bed of the Tisza river (Report about the excavations performed at one of the points of the 4th-6th century „Siedlungskammer in Kengyel village) Abstract The north-western part of Kengyel s land in the period enduring from the last quarter of the 4th century untill the third quarter of the 6th century it was populated by a well separating enclave-like settlement-group. The lodging-places one of the largest bed-remains ot the Middle-Tisza-region (in the past backwater) has been joining almost reminiscently of chain-loops. (Round and round the field territory -evidentlyis findless at least in the curve of 3-4-5 km broad.) At one of the members of this socalled „Siedlungskammer" - after the trait of the Elba-region' s Roman and early middle age settlement-history-, on the early migration age site No.3. from the years of 1983-1984 we were going on with archeological excavations in the spring and autumn of 1992. As follows we shall be giving an account or the results, with support of drawings and photos, explanatory-texts attached to them; the whole of illustration material is the work of the author. By way of addendum up to a figure I am bringing finds repeatedly from the Germanic material of Tiszafüred—Morotvapart. Picture 1. Kengyel-Vigh-tanya (-homestead). The situation of the early Merovingian age Gepidic settlement in Szolnok-Törökszentmiklós-Tiszaföldvár triangle, from the present-day Tisza-valley at about 9 km and from the Tisza-stagnant-water of Alcsi approx. 4,5 km as the crow flies. Picture 2. Kengyel-Vigh-tanya. The eastern part of the site, the high-bank, far away the ,,head-land -like terrain-formation. By the excavations achieved on two occasions we succeeded to discover altogether five eastern Germanic objects, wich were been from one another at 30-120/-150/ metres. Picture 3. Kengyel-Vigh-tanya. Point 1. Early migration age settlement-object, the foot-stepped spot of the discolouring. It was a regular, straight-sided, square with rounded corners, of 3 x 3 metres feature. Picture 4. Kengyel-Vigh-tanya. Point 1. As the first dug-out early migration age residing-building was lain in the „promontorium"-like corner of the high-bank devoid of inundation on the uppermost part of the slope. In the picture we can see the westeastern and the north-southern sections from the documentation of excavation. Picture 5. Kengyel-Vigh-tanya. Point 1. Pit-house from the early Merovingian age. Selected, representative finds from the ceramic-ensemble. These are wheel-turned, granulous, grey cooking-pots, on average with height of 20 cm. Rims and bottoms. Picture 6. Kengyel-Vigh-tanya. Point 4. Pit (pitfall) from the early Merovingian era, it was originally in all likelihood some sort of farm-building. The north-southern section (profile), though the authenticity of the stratification somewhat diminishes, that the design was composed of merely more or less dry witness-wall. 29
