GYULA KOCSIS LIVESTOCK-TRADE IN THE SETTLEMENTS OF SZOLNOK COUNTY IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 16TH CENTURY It was revealed long ago by investigations on economic history that a large annual amount of livestock had been exported to western markets (mainly cattle) from Hungarian territories during the 16th century. However the documents that remained from the "thirtieth-part offices" does not really make it possible to establish the rations of different smaller districts in total livestock export. For the past few decades there have been some resources published, from the documents of Turkish administration in the 1560's, which enable us to examine this problem. On the basis of Turkish customs-records published and of abstracts from the bridge-toll lists of Érsekújvár from 1586—88, the author of this paper describes the livestock trade of the 16th century in the settlements in the area of today's Szolnok county. It can be established that in Szolnok county there were only very few settlements that exported livestock. As compared to average Hungarian conditions, Jászberény and Mezőtúr were significant centres of cattletrade during the 16th century. In 1563—64 Jászberény was the 2nd largest centre (with 2212 cattle) and Mezőtúr the 7th one (with 1479 cattle). By 1587-88 Jászberény had fallen back to number 9 (1740 cattle), while Mezőtúr had made significant progress in livestock-trade (number 3 with 5359 cattle). The study is completed with a list of sources, practical for research in local history, in which the author presents the names of traders and drovers involved in cattle export and the amount of cattle exported on every occasion for each settlement. 52
