KÁLMÁN KISS THE EVOLVEMENT OF DEMOCRATIC LIFE IN KISÚJSZÁLLÁS IN 1944-45 The study presents the democratic development, the start of the evolvement of new life in a small town east of the River Tisza, in Kisújszállás. It is remarkable that two days after the liberation of the town, on 10th November 1944, the Provisory Town Council was formed without any superior initiations or directions. Subsisting on earlier progression, left-wing forces were organizing the new, democratic life in a revolutionary way and with the people's wisdom. Agrarian socialists, communists from 1919 and the intelligence sympathizing - with marxism found their mutual interests here. From 10th November 1944 on, the Provisory Town Council showed diverse activities, considering the interests of the population of the settlement. As demonstrated by the sources, this community was an organization of not only administrational but of power-political character, too. Its connection with the central power was established after 22nd December 1944. The democratic forces of Kisújszállás played an exemplary and initiative role also afterwards, for example when working out the order about the division of lands, setting up the people's court or supporting the capital with food. That is why the statement in the Debreceni Néplap, a press organ of national importance became famous: „Kisújzállás served as an example in Cumania." At the same time it served also as the field of practical politics, where practice and experience could be gained by many leaders, later entrusted with national tasks. 228
