organizations, their leadership and membership were able to transfer or compute the information and results of the study. Perhaps we can assume that the situation in which we find ourselves here today—in this seminar—is a microcosm of the fiber making up the question and the concern for the effectiveness of our cultural organizations, and therefore the beginning of the comprehensive study has already been initiated in some small way. Before preceeding to discuss certain aspects of our subject, I feel it incumbent upon me to remind ourselves, from a historical perspective, that we are not new to the field concerning ourselves with making Hungarian organizations in America effective. Over 100 years ago, in 1866,Mátyás Rózsafy, the secretary of the Magyar Egylet in New York City wrote the following dispatch, which appeared in the March 18 issue of the newspaper Hazánk in Budapest: Mi, a féléve megalakult "Magyar Egylet"-nek immár 250 dollárral rendelkező vagy ötvenöt tagjai, nagy és kis urak és szegény legények, rangs valláskülönbség nélkül földönfutó polgártársak egyesültünk, hogy magyarítva magyarosodjunk;hogy-alapszabályunk szavaival élve--"az Egyesült Államokban élő magyarok között egyetértést térjesszünks magyar hazánk ügye, nyelve s irodalma iránt közérdekeltséget s meleg részvétet ébresszünk." És mondhatom, hogy különösen a hazánkbani válságos s nem reménytelen idők beállta óta, mint eddig szivünk, úgy ma szemünk s fülünk nyitva áll.--Igaz ugyan, hogy a newyorki magyar ember még ma csak "nagyot iszik a hazáért s felvisit," ámde azért "kész tenni is már valamit." Sőt teszünk is már. Ugyanis derék Zágonyink indítványára folyó hó 15-ét (március 15-ét) egy rendkívüli közgyűléssel ünnepeltük meg. Elnökünk egy átgondolt, történelmileg alkalmi beszédben, szakavatottsággal idézé lelkünk elé nemzeti s alkotmányos múltúnk szent emlékeit, százados közjogi harcaink jelentékenyebb mozzanatait .... A jeles beszéd folyamában, úgy mint végeztével, éljennel fogadtatott. Követték ezt több oldalróli rövid megjegyzések, az elnöki szónoklat hazafi érzelmeit visszhangozok—melyek után a nap indítványa: "hazafi hódolattal járulni a magyar országgyűlés s nestor vezére elé," jött tárgyalás alá. Ezt a javaslatot nem fogadták el mert vita közben bebizonyosodott, hogy a magyarországi szellem miatt még nem ütött számunkra a hazatérés órája.^ How reminiscent that is of other organizations, and how contemoorary the purposes of the Magyar Egylet are! Then, in 1938, a group of persons and organizations in the United States got together to establish a new organization to be called the Hungarian American Foundation. Its purposes, according to its by-laws—a fragile copy of which I am pleased to show you from our own Foundation Library^stated: The primary purpose of this Foundation is to interpret the American democratic ideal and cultural heritage to the Hungarian immigrant and those of our people who are of Hungarian parentage. To expose and to counteract radical and subversive movements instigated by foreign sources; by means of education to expound the superiority of the American way, through the safe, sane principles as established in our great Constitution. It is the desire of the Foundation to coordinate the various local Hungarian organizations in America, to the end that each of these groups may more effectively 31 1 I
