®1}£ ^Eíűttfr Dear Mr. Pulitzer: I have been meaning to write to you to thank you for publishing the . HUNGARIAN HERITAGE REVIEW. As always, one finds all sorts of excuses for delaying such tasks. I certainly hope that it is not too late. I am a first generation Hungarian-American, but while I was born in what at that time was Hungary (Nagyvarad), I never was allowed to behave like a Hungarian. As with many of us Transylvanians, once Romania was “gifted” with our land, I was denied my heritage by the Romanian authorities. After I found refuge in the U.S. (1964) I was isolated from any organized group of Hungarians because of geography. I have lived mainly in the South, while most Hungarians appear to congregate in areas where the climate approximates that of Hungary. Your magazine was and is precisely what I and my family needed. It has provided me with information that kept me in touch with my roots and it allowed me to share some of the information with my American-born wife. Our son will be raised with a clear awareness and pride of his heritage. While the HUNGARIAN HERITAGE REVIEW is much needed today, it will be needed even more in the future when the last of us who emigrated in the 50’s or 60’s start losing contact with their Hungarian soul. I am sure that there are many of us who feel that the particular flavor imparted by the HUNGARIAN HERITAGE REVIEW is a vast improvement over the sometimes irrational vocalizations of some of the (unrealistic) extremist groups. Through the HUNGARIAN HERITAGE REVIEW we have a source for learning, and also a source for sharing our particular brand of reasoning, culture, feelings, and accomplishments. To wit and add to your collection of Hungarian anecdotes, I remember the occasion when the late Prof. Kuffler (Harvard University) was being introduced as the lecturer at Florida State University. The moderator said “... and some of you may know that Dr. Kuffler was born in Hungary, a country which gave the world an inordinately larger proportion of scientists and artists than would be expected from a country ten times her size.” Only a doctoral student at the time, I felt my chest swelling with pride and looked around to the rest of my colleagues as if saying... “See, I told you that we, Hungarians, are special!” I do hope you will be able to resume publication of the HUNGARIAN HERITAGE REVIEW. I am also sure that if it is financial matters that prevent the continuation of the HUNGARIAN HERITAGE REVIEW, many of us will be willing to pitch in an extra share. I, for one, would not mind if you doubled the subscription price. Let us hear from you at the earliest opportunity. Or better yet, let us hope that there will be an issue of the HUNGARIAN HERITAGE REVIEW in our mailboxes real soon. DR. ANDREW J. ROZSA Pelham, Alabama EDITOR’S NOTE: This is only one example of the many, many letters of concern and support we received from our readers and, for which, we are truly grateful. Yes, the HUNGARIAN HERITAGE REVIEW is needed today and will be needed even more in the future. This is why we did not take the easy way out and quit in disgust but, instead, moved “heavenand-earth” to resume publication. No, we won’t have to, nor do we intend to, increase our subscription price to help make ends meet. But, if each one of our readers would make an effort on our behalf to get us only one new subscriber, that would be the biggest help of all. Dear Mr. Pulitzer: Enclosed please find my check for renewal to this wonderful, informative magazine that I have been reading and bragging about. I thought I knew quite a bit of my Hungarian background from my parents, but I’m finding out, with each issue, how great we are and more proud each day. God bless you, and all the people who work so hard to create this magazine, and may you keep doing this for many more years. I’m sure you’ll never run out of material. JULIA MELNYK Chicago, Illinois Dear Sirs: Please renew my subscription for another year. I have enjoyed every issue of your magazine. Keep up the good work. ROSE BERES, Trenton, New Jersey Dear Sir: I would like to subscribe to your interesting and informative magazine. A good source of information for a Canadian-born “Magyar”.
