iMungartan-jAmericana Gregorius (Gergely), 16th century. Commandant of the fortress of Murany, Hungary. Antonius (Antal), died at the glorious defense of the fortress of Eger, Hungary, (September 9 - October 18, 1552) against a large Turkish army. Franciscus (Ferenc), died in the unsuccessful defense of Eger (see above) in 1596. The Turkish Sultan, Mehmed III led the siege in person from September 20 to October 13 against the small Hungarian force while the commander-in-chief of the Habsburg army (which served the same king) was waiting passively for the fall of the fortress, by then, an important link in the defense system of Royal Hungary.---------------------------------1 Petrus (Peter) Kovats “de Tepe”. Captain of the Ha­­jdus (Haydus) in the town Tepe (Bihar County), a loyal supporter of the Transylvanian Prince Stephanus (István) Bocskay, during his campaigns against the Habsburg king in 1605-1606 to secure the constitutional rights in Hungary and Transylvania, and the freedom of the Protestant churches. (The brothers, Ambrosius and Peter Kovats were Calvinists also.) Stephanus (István). Killed in the battle of Mohács, Hungary, in 1526. Soon after, the Turkish Empire established itself as dominant power in the central third of Hungary for 160 years. The western third of the country elected a king of the House of Habsburg who ruled over Hungary for four centuries. The eastern third emerged as the Hungarian Principate of Tran­sylvania which became the defender of the rights of the Hungarian na­tion to political independence and religious freedom. Petrus (Peter) Kovats “de Keszi”. “Iudex Nobilium" (Judge of the Nobility) in Borsod County. He was the first known collector of the documents of this Kovats family, the members of which were dispersed by adverse events in history over several counties in Eastern Hungary. r * i Georgius (György) Andreas (András). Prominent officer in the times of the Turkish occupation of Central Hungary, fighting the Turkish invaders. Stephanus (István). Local ad­ministrator during the campaigns (1704-1711) led by the legendary Fran­­cis Rákóczi II, Elected Prince of Hungary and Transylvania. His daughter Elisabeth married (Gabriel (Gabor) Hegyi de Zadorfalva, a Coun­ty Notary of Heves and Szolnok Coun­ties, compiler of the first draft of the Kovats family history up to the mid-18th century. Petrus (Peter) I--------­Georgius (György) Owner of the ancestral family estate at Kal (Kaal), Heves County. All four brothers and their sister Catherina (Katalin) were born at Keszi, Borsod County. I Joannes Kovats "de Keszi et Kaal". Grandfather of Col. Michael Kovats de Fabricy. Fought under the Transylvanian Princes Emericus (Imre) Thököly and Francis Rákóczi II. He was commandant of the fortress Csabrag. Wife: Susanna Szabó de Szihalom. Possessed an “allodium’' (free, untaxed family estate granted for military and other services) at Kai, Heves County.
