His articles on management techni­ques, business economics, interna­tional licensing and technology transfer have been published by leading journals in the United States and abroad. He has been a frequent spokesman for the interests of small business, is active in community service projects and has organized and sponsored economic develop­ment and education programs for inner city areas. Since 1956, he has been an ad­visor to the United States Depart­ment of Commerce. He has served on official U.S. Trade and Invest­ment Missions to France, India, Japan, Burma, Philippines, Australia and New Zealand. He is a member of the New York Regional Export Expansion Coun­cil and has been chairman of its Small Business Committee. In 1979-80, he was on the President’s Committee for Science and Innovation. He is Chairman of the Board of Swarthmore College, on the Managing Board and Chairman of the Investment Committee of the Metropolitan Opera Association, a Trustee and Executive Committee member of the New School for Social Research, Chairman of the Conference of Board Chairmen of small independent liberal arts col­leges, on the Advisory Board of the Columbia University Graduate School of Business, on the boards of Symphony Space and the Center for Defense Information. He is founding donor of the Eugene Lang College of the New School for Social Research. He is founder and Trustee of the Eugene M. Lang AUGUST 1987 Foundation. He is principal donor of the Eugene M. and Theresa Lang Music Building at Swarthmore Col­lege and of the Theresa and Eugene M. Lang Health Education Center of the Booth Memorial Medical Center in New York. He is found­ing sponsor of the CCIP Housing Rehabilitation Program in Chester, PA and the “I Have a Dream" education program and Chairman of the "I Have a Dream" Foundation in New York. He has established many scholarships, student and faculty fellowships at Swarthmore and other institutions. He is former Chairman of the Circle-in-the- Square Theater. He is a member of the Univer­sity Club, Society of Automotive Engineers, Licensing Executives Society. He has served on boards of numerous professional and civic associations. From 1972 to 1981 he was a national Vice-Chairman of Americans for Democratic Action. In 1973, he received its "Business­man of the Year" award and, in 1979, its Distinguished Service award. In 1980, he received the Community Service Award of the Booth Memorial Medical Center. In 1981, he received an honorary LLD degree from Swarthmore College. In 1982, he received the George Washington Award of the American Hungarian Foundation. In 1985, he received the Distinguished Ser­vice Award of the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, Brotherhood Award of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, Public Service Citation of the A. Philip Randolph Institute, American Image Award of the Mens Fashion Institute, per­sonal public service recognition = JMungarian-^mertcan Profiles = by President Ronald Reagan. In 1986, he received honorary LHD degrees from College of New Rochelle and Bank Street College. Also, in 1986, he received the Jef­ferson Award from The American Institute for Public Service, the John Jay Award for Leadership in Education from the Commission on Independent Colleges & Univer­sities, the Hubert H. Humphrey Humanitarian Award from the Na­tional Urban Coalition, the Booth Humanitarian Award from the Volunteers of America, the Fami­ly of Man Award of the Nat'l Coun­cil of Churches. In 1987, he receiv­ed an honorary LLD degree from St. Paul's College and honorary LHD degree from the New School for Social Research. Also in 1987, he received the Human Rights Award from the New Jersey Educa­tion Ass'n., the Martin Luther King Medal of Freedom of New York State, the Jacob K. Javíts Public Service Award of the Citizens Committee of N.Y.C. He has received many citations of service from the Department of State, Department of Commerce and Small Business Administration of the U.S. Government. He has been active in the Democratic party at na­tional and local levels. Lang was born in New York City in 1919. He received a B.A. degree in 1938 from Swarthmore College, an M.S. in 1945 from Col­umbia University and studied mechanical engineering at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute.
