HOP Vol XX Special Number 1968 No 2- Jßl^— (08009) The churches, the international church organizations aid the vari­ous Christian groups have'undoubtedly done much for peace and for promoting the cause of disarmament. In line with the formsr traditions of the ecumen­ical movement, the years since the end of World War II have witnessed to the work of laying down the theological foundations for the peace service of the Christian churches; certain methods have .been adopted; certain pas­sable avenues of approach have been mapped and the main outlines of Chris­tian peace service have been drawip, We refer in particular to three aspects of this service8 1) Within the individual churches and also in the international church organizations, significant study projects have been launehed. One of the objectives has been the careful investigation cf the great problems of modern humanity (nuclear energy, international problems, social justice, social change's, etc)c These studies have underscored the recognition that one cannot make any useful contribution to the discussion and solution of these problems without sufficient information and thorough familiarity with the issues involved„ Efforts to give a careful theological treatment to the urgent problems of the present are -in progress. Outstanding examples of this effort have been the Geneva World Conference on Church and Society, the work of the Secord.Vatican Council and the activity of many international Christian conferences, organizations and groups. 2) During the said period, the churches and the international church organizations have, on many occasions and in a most praiseworthy man­ner, declared their conviction on- specific international prob Ions cr on tendencies affecting the life of nan kind 0 Speaking of disarmament, we may refer to significant consultations on disarmament under the auspices of the World Council of Churches or to the continuous and resolute worn of the Chris­tian Peace Conference in the interests of disarmament in the last decade«, 3) There have also been certain actions and active contributions on the part of the churches offered toward the solution cf the great prob­lems of mankinds This positive attitude of Christianity is signalised and proved by the work of international church gatherings or, for instance, by the launching cf a movement whileh gives top priority to the cruse of peace, the movement of the Christian Pence conferences We believe that these forms of Christian peace service cure not only to be retained but are to be deve­loped and enriched«, Call to Repentance At last, we must state that, although in some areas there are hope­ful signs of progress, the present situation is far from being satisfactory«, Hie present crises of the world, the sufferings of the peoples in the throes cf an aggressive war, the unaccomplished tasks to establish social and ecc—
