CONGRATULATIONS to Gabriella Nádas! REFORMÁTUS KOLLÉGIUM, KOLOZSVÁR Calvin Synod School Fund On June 20, 1996, the beautiful new building of the Reformed Church’s Bethlen Kata Diaconal Center was inaugurated in Kolozsvár, Rumania. Bishop Kálmán Csiha expressed his deepest appreciation and gave recognition to Gabriella (Kuni) Nádas for her outstanding contribution to the education of Hungarian students in Kolozsvár as well as for her efforts to secure considerable financial support for the new bvulding. Mrs. Nádas, the only Hungarian-American among those honored, was presented a certificate and medallion declaring her “Magister Ecclesiae Reforma tae Transsylvaniensis” during a special service held at the Farkas Street Reformed Church, which also included the ordination of 54 newly graduated Reformed ministers. As Gabriella Nádas was unable to attend the ceremony, Edith Lauer accepted the award on her behalf. (The attached table lists the annual donations for the building, for scholarships, the member of scholarships and the number of donors.) * George Varga Endows Western Maryland College Business Program Seventy students are enrolled in an unusual and creative 4 year program leading to a Western Maryland College Bachelor of Art degree in Business Administration. The students, three quarters of whom are Hungarian, spend the first two years in Budapest studying a U.S. curriculum in English. For the last two years of the program the students live in the U.S., on Western Maryland College’s beautiful campus near Baltimore and Washington D.C. Coalition member, George Varga, an outstanding alumnus of Western Maryland College, has made a major contribution to underwrite the U.S. expenses of the student, many of whom would be unable to afford payment. Dr. Robert Chambers, President of the College, and George Varga are seeking additional financial support for this worthwhile program. Calendar of Events of Member Organizations Summer 1996 August 8-18 — Hungarian Scouts Association Abroad (HSSA) Leader Training Courses for patrol leaders, assistant scoutmasters, scoutmasters and troop leaders in Fillmore, N.Y. September 1 — Scout Day, Cleveland, Ohio. Az elmúlt évben 49 támogató 17,500 dollárt adományozott 84 diák ösztöndíjára, akik a Református Egyház gimnáziumában tanulnak Kolozsvárom A támogatók ajándéka 120 és 240 dollár volt személyenként. Reméljük, hogy a diákok és a támogatók levelezése jobban megérteti velünk a Romániában élók helyzetét. Ebben az évben 3,970 dollárt adományoztunk az új iskola-intemátus épületére. Az intemátus az épület egyik szárnyában lesz. Maga az épület készen van, a hivatalos megnyitásra 1996. júniusában került sor. Sajnos, 1995 június 28-án a román szenátus elfogadta az új törvényt, amely nem ad lehetőséget egyházi iskolák létesítésére. A törvényt még nem alkalmazzák, de ez bekövetkezhet az 1996-os iskolaév végén. Hogy ez a törvény miképpen fog kihatni a Kollégiumra, még nem tudjuk. A törvény meghatározza, hogy felvételi és érettségi vizsgákat csak román nyelven lehet megírni. Aggodalmunk az, hogy nem lesz diák, aki vállalja a hátrányokat a magyar nyelven folytatott tanulás miatt. Az iskola épületet — amelyet Diakónia Központnak neveznek — 1996. júniusában szenteltek fel. Már a diakonissza főiskola 3 osztálya beköltözött és rövidesen a katekétikai központ és a gyógyszertár is ide települ át. A másik szárnyban lesz a kollégium bentlakása. A szárnyat eredetileg öregotthonnak nevezték. A kollégiumot ideiglenesen költöztetik be, mert még fenntartják a reményt, hogy visszakapják a volt iskola épületeket. Az 1995-ös iskola évet 225 tanuló kezdte meg, melyből 53 az új, kilencedik osztályos diák. Az érettségi vizsga 68 diáknak sikerült a 74-ból, 21-en bejutottak a főiskolára, de egyúttal a tavalyi és a tavalyelőttiek közül is szép számmal jutottak be az idén. Az énekkar megkapta az Erdélyi Magyar Közművelődési Egyesület (EMKE) díját. Ez egy nagyon komoly kitüntetés, és sok örömet hozott az egész iskolának. Nehéz idők következnek az Erdélyben élő magyarokra és most még inkább mint valaha szükség van anyagi és leki támogatásra. NÁDAS GABRIELLA * The Hungarian Reformed Federation of America 100 year Celebration This is a year rich in anniversaries. The HRFA will celebrate its 100th anniversary on September 15,1996, in Trenton, New Jersey, the city where it weis founded. An ecumenical service will be followed by a reception during which a special publication about the history of HRFA will be officially introduced. On September 16 the Reformed Federation will holds its Annual Meeting and 35th Annual Convention. * House of Hungary On March 6th, 1996, the monument of Ágoston Haraszthy, the First Sheriff of San Diego, had been moved to its final site in the Park District. The memorial was dedicated by Mr. Jim Bates, Chairman of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. The bronze relief of Haraszthy is the work of the sculptor Sándor Finta. The monument was built in 1977 with the efforts of the Mindszenty Scout Troup led by Mr. Joseph Fedák. Ágoston Haraszthy came to California in 1849. In his two decades in this state he became “the father of the modem California viticulture.” In San Diego Haraszthy became councilman, then assemblyman. Later, he moved north to Buena Vista and established the largest vineyard in the world. A heavy tax cost the estate all its profits and he moved to Nicaragua where died in 1869.
