24 Hírünk a világban writes (under his pen name, Andor Sziklay) about “Hungarian vestiges under Yugoslav dust,” i.e., Hungarian historical monuments and memories in present-day Yugoslavia. Zoltán Bay, the noted physicist, describes in an interview his researches with LASER in the National Bureau of Standards and his discoveries — achieved in collaboration with Nobel Prize winner Albert Szent-Györgyi — concerning photosynthesis. Theodore Von Kármán, the “father of supersonic flight” and greatest theoretician of jet propulsion, has received the first “National Medal of Science,” the highest scientific award in the United States. The “father of the H-Bomb,” Edward Teller, received the 1962 Fermi Prize. Out of six holders of the prize three are Hungarian-born scientists: John Von Neumann, Eugene Wigner and Edward Teller. Loránd Dabasi Schweng (Caracas) is working on the economic development of Venezuelan Guayana under the assignment of the Joint Center for Urban Studies of M.I.T. and Harvard University. To exploit the rich iron ore of that region, a huge mining and steel production center is planned. Paul de Auer, former Hungarian Minister in Paris, is an exceedingly prominent writer of authoritative studies and articles on European and world problems. László Némethy, President of the Association of Hungarian Engineers in Canada, will direct the planning and putting into operation of the immense Durgapur Steel Works in India. Professor C. A. Macartney (Oxford) has accomplished an extensive lecture tour in the United States. In his lectures, he discussed the problems of Eastern Europe and of Hungary. Béla Bartók’s popularity in Australia is cited. The Hungarian Quartet presented Bartók’s six string quartets in Melbourne. A Béla Bartók Society, headed by Steven Edvi-Illés, is active there. The various bibliographies list books by Hungarians published in Great Britain in 1961, articles concerning Hungary published in the United States in 1962, and Professor Pálinkás’ (Florence) bibliography of Hungarian books published abroad since 1945.
