The European Union and the Hungarian urban waste water treatment (abstract) Alex Csapák, PHD student Eötvös Loránd University Faculty of Science Department of Social and Economic Geography After Hungary joined the European Union, the regulations of Council Directive 91/271/EEC (concerning urban waste water treatment) became compulsory in our country. The completition of the requirements described in the Directive gives an enormous work to Hungarian settlements, although our country has been granted a ten years’ respite. Hungary has already established its national urban waste water treatment programme, and the financial sources of the ISPA and of the Structural and the Cohesion Funds have opened for Hungarian self governments. It is a great problem that the available funds are not enough for Hungary to develop its waste water collecting systems and treatment plants. Another problem is that these funds are usually not accesible for smaller projects. Most Hungarian settlements have not got enough capital to manage their waste water investments, which therefore need the support of the Hungarian State.
