Abstract: The aim of the research was to compare the species composition, seasonal dynamics of periphytic diatom communities and the ecological status of Lake Balaton. Ten different sampling sites of (Vonyarcvashegy, Badacsony, Balatonszepezd, Tihany, Csopak, Balatonkenese, Siófok, Szántód, Fonyód, Balatonmáriafiirdő) were investigated monthly between March 2007 and February 2008. The species composition was analized with light microscope. 107 diatom taxa were identified. There was considerable difference between the samples of the northern and the southern parts of the lake, except for two sampling sites (Tihany and Szántód) where the current velocity of the water similar to running waters. Balatonmáriafiirdő sharply distinct from the other sites, because of the high dominance of Staurosira grigorszkyi. Seasonal change of the diatom community was also traceable. According to the applied M1B index, the ecological status of the lake varied between medium and good. Slightly increasing MIB index values from west to east were observed. The ecological status of the lake at the inflow of the Zala river was medium, but the other basins of the lake were in good ecological condition. Keywords: Balaton, reed, diatom community, MIB index, ecological status.
