Abstract: Seasonal changes in the phisico-chemical characteristics of the surface water and the sediment interstitial water were studied in the Hungarian part of Lake-Fertő /Neusidler See Interstitial water samples were collected in healthy and die-back reed stands and the open water area from the 0-5 cm sediment layers. The pH, conductivity, redoxipotential and temperature of the water and intersitial water were measured in situ with a Hydrolog 2100 field equipment The CI", N0 2\ NO]', PO» 1' SO< 2", Na\ K*, Mg !\ Ca 2*, NH 4\ concentrations were determined with a Dionex DX-120 ionchromatograph. Electrical conductivity, pH, CI", Na\ K*, Mg 2*, Ca 2*, NH/, concentration increased from March to September, the highest increase was observed in the die-back reed stand with shallow water and high organic matter content. Changes in the phisico-chemical characteristics of the surface water and the interstitial water were related to water level fluctuation, meteorological conditions and the ammounts of accumulated organic matter. Knowing the range of phisico-chemical characteristics in the sediment interstitial water we can predict pathways of biochemical processes (NOs'and SO4 2 reduction, nitrification and denitrification processes etc.) occuring in sediment. Keywords: interstitial water, phisico-chemical characteristics, seasonal changes, shallow lake
