Several authors relate reproductive success to wing asymmetry in odonates although the various and often contradictory results in the literature do not allow us to clear the role of symmetry and its implications. The damselfly of Ischnura elegáns was used in our experiment to test the hypothesis that the more symmetrical the wings are, the greater success the individuals achieve in pairing. Males of I. elegáns were collected three times during the reproductive period and separated as paired and unpaired in the field. The distance between arculus and proximal comer of the pterostigma was measured to determine the rate of fluctuating asymmetiy. Body size was also calculated. We found that neither reproductive success nor body size correlated significantly with wing asymmetry. The inadequate determination of reproductive succcss and major contradictions between long-term and short-term studies are discussed as possible explanations for the results.
