Comparative study of the most important planktonic N-fiiing cyanobacteria from Laké Balaton Attila Kovács, Mátyás Présing, Lajos Vörös Balaton Limnological Research Institute of the Hungárián Academy of Sciences, Tihany P.O.B. 35., H-8237 Abstract: The progressive eutrophication of Laké Balaton was perceived in the early seventies associated with increasing dominance of cyanobacteria. From 1975 and onwards, the summer mass development of filamentous N-fixing blue-greens became a regular phenomenon m the western part - and sometimes in the eastem part - of the lake. During the sixties and early seventies the Aphanizomenon flos-aquae was the most abundant N-fixing cianobacterium in the lake, Iater the tropical Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii became dominant and caused nuisance blooms. During the latest bloom (1994) this species produced 95 % of totál phytoplankton biomass. Since 1995 the summers were cooler and wetter and the A. flos-aquae became dominant N-fixing cyanobacterium again. These two species were isolated from the lake and their cultures were used for experimentál studies. We studied the light and temperature-dependence of growth and pigment composition of C. raciborskii and A. flos-aquae The temperature dependence of growth parameters, pigment composition and cell morphology were determined in an incubation system at seven difTerent hght intensities, between 10 and 390 (lEinstein m' 2 sec' 1. Lighting was unidirectional, triplicates were placed in a box with five black walls, one side being open toward the light. Our results indicate that C. raciborskii is a termophilic species. The linear relationship was observed between temperature and growth rate between 15 and 36 °C. The growth rate of A. flos aquae raised to 24 °C then slowly decreased at 27 and 30 °C and the eells were killed at 33 °C. The A parameters of the growth-irradiance curves of C. raciborskii increased linearly with increasing temperature and it's values varied between 7 and 68 (iKinstein m 2 sec"'. The ! t parameter of A. flos-aquae increased to 18-20 °C and in the higher temperature rangé the/j parameter became independent from temperature. Carotenoid / chlorophyll-ű ratio of both species increased with increasing light intensity. Keywords Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, growth rate, light intensity, temperature
