Hydrological information necessary for planning and operational decisions in water management are required either in the form of originál observed data series or in the form of condensed hydrological information derived front the former by statistical data processing (Fig. 1.) In the past, due to the lack of computerized data banks and readily available program packages, mostly condensed information were requested by the practice. The paper gives an outline of the history of the publication of the latter in Hungary from the early 1960es, trough the Illrd National Master Plan of Water Management (Fig. 2.) up to our time, when - as an outstanding achievement of Hungárián hydrologists - the publishing of the series „Technical-Hydrological Characterization of Hungary's Waters", contain ing condensed hydrological information (Figs. 4-6.) is approaching comletition (V7G, 1984-1989; Goda, 1988; Zsuffa, 1990).
