Abstract: In the biological oxidation the respiratory electron transport system (ETS) makes bridge between the oxidizing organic compounds and the molecular oxigén. The ETStest showes the capacity of the biological oxidation. The ETS-activity of microplankton (1—60 fim), net zooplankton (60—250 fim and 250 fim -<) and sediment was measured in the hypertrophic Keszthely-basin and in the meso-eutrophic Siófok-basin of Lake Balaton in 1988—1989. 6 times liigher microplanktonic and 1.61—1.63 times higher zooplanktonic ETSactivities l1 were found in the hypertrophic Keszthely-basin than in the meso-eutrophic area. The Keszthely—Siófok ratio of the microplanktonic ETS-activity m! was 3.83—3.94 to 1 in 1988 and 1989. The zooplanktonic ETS-activity contributed 6.0— —10.8% to the totál measured sestonic ETS-activity in the Keszthely-basin and, 19.0—30.8% to that in the Siófok-basin in 1988 and 1989. The results suggest a trend that the share of the metabolic activity of the net zooplankton in the whole metabolism of the water column decreases with the increasing trophity (prim.prod.). The sediment was biologically active to 30—35 cm in the Keszthely-basin and, to 15—20 cm in the Siófok-basin. ín the Keszthely-basin we found 10% cm1 and, in the Siófok-basin 25% cm1 relatíve decreases in the sediment ETS-activity cm3 with deptli. The sediment ETS-activity m~ 2 was mucii higher than the planktonic one: 9.3 times both in the Keszthely-basin and in the Siófok-basin. The Keszthely— Siófok ratio of the sediment ETS-activity mí was 3 to 1.
