Abstract: For meeting safely the water demands in and around Gyöngyös town the artesian waters in the region have been explored for their potential development. The survey has eovered the areas to the West of the town. From the results it was eoncluded that water supply in the region can be expanded by developing the sand aquifers in the Upper-Pannonian sequence of layers. The aquifers in the area bounded by the eommunities Gyöngyös, Nagyréde and Atkár appeared as the most suitable sources of supply, since the clay content increases towards the Nortli and the West, while towards the South the aquifers become thinner and spread into several veins. Recliarge investigations and simulation have shown a safe yield of 12 000 m

3/d to be still available which should be developed uniformly. For tliis reason two interconnected waterworks have been proposed. The water can be withdrawn by means of drilled wells of 100 to 400 m depht. Depending on the particular hydrogeological conditions, well groups comprising 3—4 wells can be sunk at each of the waterworks.
