302 HID ROLOGIAI KÖZLÖNY 198!). 69. ÉVF., 6. SZAM illustrative examples. The material referred to evaluated includes the Public Administration and General Map of the Hungarian Kingdom (Administrativ-und General-Karte des Königreiches Ungarn) (Figs. 1, 2 and 5 ), the maps of I. Weiss (Fig. 3), H. Wallandt ÍFig. 4), I. Péchy (Figs. 6, 7), the Royal and Imperial Military Geographic Institute (K. u. K. Militargeographisches Institut) (Figs. 8—12), B. Vdlyi (Fig. 13) and T. Pokomy (Fig. 14). The principal data of the maps mentioned in the paper are summarized in Table I. Of the conclusions of practical interest derived by studying the old maps attention is called to the following: — On the basis of the topographic features (Figs. 1, 2, 8, 11 and 14) it is possible to identify the location and orientation of tectonic faults. — The representation of the river network indicates also the tectonic faults (Figs. 3, 5, 6, 7 and 10), the character of river reaches (Figs. 3, 5 and 10), the opportunities of withdrawing terrace water, or of sand- and gravel mining (Figs. 5, 12 and 14). In the areas of former lakes (Figs. 1, 2, 4, 9 and 13), marshes and swamps (Figs. 3, 5 and 10) marsh (meadow) clays, peats, bog-soil, bog lime, further alluvial soils, alkali and bog-soils or dolomitic silt are likely to have developed and these areas are patentially suited as reservoir or fishpond sites. — Erosion forms imply harder (Fig. 11) or softer, loose rocks (Figs. 6, 7 and 11). — From the position of older (early Holocene) and younger (Neoholocene) river beds conclusions may be drywn concerning meander travel and the amount of runoff (Figs. 10 and 12). — The visual representation of contour features offers assistance in delineating and illustrating cartographically the boundaries of geologic formations in mountain areas (Figs. 8 and 11), lowlands (Figs. 9 and 13) and riparian areas (Figs. 5, 10 and 12) alike. — Increasingly accurate surveys indicate also morphologic features which allow in combination with the most recent maps a ready and clear overview of a particular area or typical section of the terrain. Old maps are, therefore, well worth studying before any attempt is made at solving problems in hydrogeology of water management.
