Dr. Csanádi L.—Dr. Kernács S.: A vízszennyezödési gazdasági károk for the treatment of polluted water before use, or as a reduction in national income caused by production losses due to water pollution. The deterioration of the quality of water resources, the reduced utilization potential and the magnitude of losses resulting therefrom are controlled by the chemical and physical properties of wastes discharged into the recipients, as well as by the ratio of discharge to rate of streamflow. A positive relation is thus seen to exist between the type and extent, as well as the resulting social-economic losses. This causal relation makes possible and necessary to establish a uniform interpretation of pollution or quality deterioration due to a single, or several pollutants and limiting the general use of water, (hat can be related numerically to the magnitude of social-economic losses caused thereby. The system of qualification, capable of numerically expressing the degree of pollution and the deterioration of quality, and based on the effect due to the total quant ity and composition of pollutants present in water, could be applied and interpreted uniformly in different catchments, yielding criteria for comparisons founded on relatively sound indices. The magnitude of losses to cconomy duo to pollution depends, on the other hand, on the economic development and economic structure of a particular area, implying that a certain degree of deterioration of water quality may, in a particular area, give rise to a loss that increases with economic development. in order to ensure the conditions necessary for social development and economic growth, it is of fundamental importance in any society to preserve the natural quality of water resources, but also to establish and maintain a balance between the expenditures required for realizing this objective and (lie social benefits accruing therefrom. A method of relative evaluation meeting the aforementioned requirements is essential for attaining this balance and for monitoring the dynamic interrelations of water pollution and damages caused thereby. Owing to the complexity of the problem a method suitable for estimating the losses caused to economy by pollution cannot be developed, unless approached from two sides by cooperating engineers and economists, in that solution is required to both fundamental problems simultaneously, namely

: — The introduction of numerical values capable of expressing the reduction of general potential use value, or the deterioration under the combined influence of various pollutant s, of water resources, and — the systematic formulation and determinál ion of the magnitude of damages caused, a well as I he development of a method suitable for evaluating the interrelations between the pollutants and the damages. Dr. Sebestyén Olga köszöntése 1971. június 27-én töltötte be 80. életévét dr. Sebestyén Olga, az MTA Biológiai Kutatóintézetének (Tihany) ny. tud. osztályvezetője, a Magyar Hidrológiai Társaság tiszteleti tagja, a Nemzetközi Limnológiai Egyesület (SIL) tb. alelnöke. Sok évtizedes kutatói múltjának eredményessége, értékei, pedagógusi eredményei, szerénysége ós önzetlensége Társaságunk körében ismert és nagyrabecsült, hiszen közöttünk fejti ki közel negyed évszázada magasszintű, példamutató társadalmi munkásságát . Nála nincsen különbség a hivatali és a társadalmi munka kötelezettségének megítélésében, munkájának, magatartásának egészét a szaktudománya, hazája és embertársai iránti tudományos, nevelői és emberi elhivatottság jellemzi. Széles körű hidrobiológiai-limnológiai tudása, a szakmai világirodalom átfogó ismerete nemcsak abban segíti, hogy oly sokat tud átadni a felnövő nemzedékeknek, hanem arra is képessé teszi, hogy a Hozzá forduló gyakorlati szakembereknek a szükséges útbaigazítást mindenkor megadja. Eddigi életművének nagyraértékelósét a Magyar Népköztársaság Elnöki Tanácsa most azzal fejezte ki, hogy a szép jubileum alkalmával másodízben t üntette ki a Munkaérdemrend arany fokozatával. Születése napján, a tihanyi Biológiai Kutatóintézet — amelynek hírnevét több mint négy évtizede emeli — bensőséges ünnepség keretében köszöntötte Őt, az MTA Hidrobiológiái Bizottságának és a Magyar Hidrológiai Társaság képviselőinek jelenlétében.
