234 Hidrológiai Közlöny 1969. 5. sz. Dr. Jámbor O.: Vertikális mezoplankton vizsgálatok Results of Verticai Mezoplancton Studies in the Cooling Pond of (he Mátravidék Thermal Power Station By Dr. Jámbor, O. Studies included the physical and chemical properties, as well as the CLADOCERA and COPEPODA population in the cooling pond of the Mátravidék thermal power station. Samples for these studies were retrivede each month of 1 964 from three levels (0, 1 and 2 m depth) in each of 7 sampling points on the cooling pond. Verticai layer samples were taken using a ME YER-bottle. Two samples were retrieved from each depth at all sampling points on each occasion, one for the chemical analysis and physical tests, the other for determining the count per litre (L/lit) of mezoplancton. Physical tests and chemical analyses were extended to the determination of temperature, pH value, mg/lit concentration of calcium and magnesium ions, suphate-, chloride-, hydrogen carbonate- and carbonate content. The mg/lit content of ions studied did not affect adversely the optimum environmental eonditions of mezoplancton. Ás shown by the star-diagrams of MAUCHA (Figs. 2 to 5), the relatíve proportions of various ions were largely constant at different sampling points. The outstanding value of sodium ion at sampling point 5. was the only departure from similarity. The concentration of calcium- and hydrogen carbonate- ions became gradually lower, whereas that of carbonate ion became higher with increasing order of sampling points. No appreciable differences were found över the entire laké in the concentration of magnesium- and chloride ions. At sampling point No. 7 the sulphate ion concentration was lower by about 100 mg/lit than the average for the lake. Samples for taking mezoplancton counts were passed through a plancton screen at the sampling point, then concentrated to 18 miit and conserved using 4% of formaline. In the concentrate the number of Entornostraca was 13 838 (100%), of which 3070 (22,90%) were Gladocera, and 10 768 (77.75%) Copepoda. The population was composed of the following species: Diaphanosoma branhyurum LIEVEN; Daphnia magna STRAUS; Daphnia pulex L DE GEER; Scapholebris vetulus O. F. MÜLLER; Chydoi •us gibbus LILLJEBORG; Chydorus latus G. O. SARS; Canthocamptus staphilinus KESSLER; Diaptomus gracilis G. O. SARS; Diaptomus bacillifer KOEBEL; Acanthocyclops gigás (CLAUS). From the counts it was found that in generál the number of Copepoda was always and every where in the cooling pond superior to that of the Cladocera. The increasing temperature with increasing current number of sampling points resulted in the proliferation of zooplancton studied. It should be of interest to study subsequently the influence of chemical pollutants of industrial origin, discharged into the lake by the power station, on the biology of water. The effect of fumes and soot precipitating on the lake surface and suspended in water would be of special interest. Owing to its high adsorptive power, soot is expeeted to bind on its surface gaseous compounds and combustion products, which when dissloved in water may affeet the metabolism of living organisms.
