Dr. Gabos Gy.: Mérnöki előtervezés Hidrológiai Közlöny 1967. 5. sz. 263 Preliminary Designing in Civil Engineering By Dr. Gy. Gabos Aetivities at the Office for Land Surveying and Soil Testing of the Ministry of Building (FTI), established apecifically for preliminary civil engineering designing, are described. The main tasks of the office consist of giving expert advice in every civil engineering problems before and in connection with planning, representing aspects of civil engineering in settlement policy and site selection, as well as actual civil engineering designing. Preliminary civil engineering designing thus comprises area surveying and subsoil exploration for determining geological, hydrogeological, soil mechanical and chemical conditions. With these informations available decisions can be taken on location, foundation design and economical construction of a partieular project. Construction drawings can be prepared and operation of the structure can be realized in a reliable and economical manner. Aetivities in the field of engineering geology extend to the study of possible sources for covering a desired supply of water, as well as the qualification — on the basis of detailed chemical analyses — of water explored, or otherwise available. Hereafter the necessary technology of treatment is determined and in somé instanees even the designs for the treatment plánt are prepared. The corrosion potential is examined and the suitable method of corrosion control is specified. Besides and beyond actual engineering activity the office is called upon to participate in technical development and research in the above fields. The efficient and economical performance of the above tasks is promoted by the Soil Mechanical and Hydrological Files kept at the Office. Valuable information material on over 100 000 exploratory borings are contained in over 25 000 soil mechanical and geological exploration reports. Cartographic and statistical summaries are for instance available on the aggressivity of groundwaters in Hungary, as well as on soil-physical properties of various representative soil types. A detailed account is then given on the aetivities of specialized branehes of the Office which contribute to the Solution of the above tasks. Among these the seetion on photogrammetry is described and examples are cited for the application of this technique in water resources management and engineering geology. Responsibilities of the seetion on applied surveying include among others the exact siting of major hydraulic structureS, checks during and after construction, as well aS studies on movements, displacements and deformations, otc. of completed power stat.ions, dams, etc. The seetion on soil mechanics is closely related to engineering geology with which it. has many problems in common, such as prediction of groundwater elevations during construction, preparation of multi — purpose geological and soil mechanical maps for settlement development. Hydrology plays an important role in decisions on settlement development, method of foundation and the evalution of groundwater observation data. Engineering geology is called upon to provide answers to water supply and water exploration problems. Methods applied include the development of springs, shallow wells, artesian wells, karstic water resources, utilization of thermal waters, studies on water resources management. Studies are performed on the improvement of well designs, primarily by the use of plastics for well filters. Accurate information on the condition of operating wells can be obtained with the help of instrument coupled well probe developed and manufactured at the Office. The probe yields data on operating wells, as well as on causes of oecasional breakdowns. Engineering geology is applied to the investigation of potential reservoir sites, in geological mapping and exploration of gravels and basic materials for the silicates industry. Coordinated teamwork of engineer experts in various fields—civil engineers, geologists, engineering geologists, chemical engineers, mechanical engineers, geophysicists, etc. — ensures the high Standard of work in the Solution of the above problems. The design seetion is engaged in designing water works and special water treatment plants for boiler installations. The plans are made to contemporary standards, networks are analysed by electronic computer, the operation of water works is automated. A nuclear group has been established for soildensity and moisture measurement, as well as for studying groundwater movement problems. The laboratory for engineering biology deals with problems related to the protection of slopes. Numerous examples of completed structures are quoted to illustrate the aetivities of the Office. Egyesületi és műszaki hírek Rovatvezető: Dr. VÁGÁS ISTVÁN A Vízkémiai és Víztechnológiai Szakosztály a Vízellátási- és Hidrogeológiai Szakosztállyal közösen 1966. dec. 9-én előadó ülést rendezett, amelyen dr. Gráf László a hazai mélységi vizek összetételéről, csoportosításáról ós geokémiai jelentőségéről tartott előadást. A Magyar Hidrológiai Társaság Vízgazdálkodási Szakcsoportja a Magyar Agrártudományi Egyesület Öntözéses Növénytermesztési Szakosztályával 1966. dec. A Szennyvíz Szakosztály 1966. dec. ( Folytatás a 283. oldalon)
