Grounilwaler recharge írom precipitation at Újkígyós By L. Lovas and L. Szabó The well-field No. 1 near the village Újkígyós of the projected water-works for the town Békéscsaba is remote from all natural watercourses. Tlierefore the daily water produetion of 6000 ou.m suggested 011 basis of hydrogeological explorations can be compensated for only by horizontal, respeetively verticai percolation in imercommunicating layers elose to the surfaee. Horizontal groundwater recharge is likely to occur through the alluvial deposits in the abandoned beds of the ancient Maros River. The problem was to determine the reliable groundwater recharge due to verticai infiltration i. <>., to local precipitation, and thus the quantity that can safely be withdrawn for continued periods as well as the extension of the catchment area required therefor. For this end hydrological and meteorologieal investigations were conducted between Ist November 1955 and ;51st May 1950 on an experimentál plot located over an elevated part of the groundwater table in the vicinity of the wellfield. In order to record changes in the moisture content of the soil, samples were taken daily at three points from depths increasing by '20 cm up to 1,60 m, and every third day from depths extending by the same i Acrements down to the groundwater table at about 5 m depth. Meteorologieal elements affecting the rate of infiltration, togetlier with groundwater level fluctuatións in 3 observation wells were simullaneously recorded. Two new instrument types were used for groundwater-level observations (Photos 1, 4 and 5). Results obtained were evaluated by a method based 011 a new coneept and bearing account for the reduction in groundwater-level fluctuatións with depth (see Fig. 12). Results of soil-pliysieal, mineralogical, soil-chemical, meteorologieal and infiltration studies lead to the conclusion, that under existing conditions groundwater recharge by verticai infiltration in the fine sandy soil is adequate for the operation of the wellfield. The recharge that can be withdrawn continuously over the area investigated corresponds to an annual precipitation of 60 mm depth. In order to ensure a recharge only in this manner eovering the daily water produetion of 6000 cu. m, a catchment providing an infiltration area of 50 sq. km may be conservatively taken intő account. The required area is available in the vicinity of the well-field and thus the recharge of the aquifer from precipitation only may be considered ensured.
