FÜGGELÉK ^^ímíá. -'HMBB ISÉ* SUMMAKY Summary County Somogy is located in Dunántúl (Transdanuhium). It is bordered in the Norlh by the laké Balaton and in the South by the river Dráva. Its area amounts to 6036 km 2 . It is one of the largest counties with slightly arranged but variable surface. The county is rich in streams. Its major waterways are the laké Balaton and the rivers Sió, Kapós, Koppány and Dráva. Its road network is known from the Román Ages on. The approximatively Northsouthern roads led from Pécs to Szombathely and Győr around the laké Balaton. Its major settlements after Conquest were: Somogyvár, Segesd, Babócsa. The major ferry crossing points: between Tihany and Szántód, as well as at Ortilos across the river Dráva. Its road network at Middle Ages is sufficiently known, its main settlements were förmed by road junctions and waterway crossings. The first military survey (1792-95) revealed a dense road network. The road construction started in the early 19 th century aided by the regulation of waterways. No road led along the lakeshore evén in the 19 lh century due the marshy areas there, it diverted from the route of the present main road in the direction of Öreglak, Marcali. In 1929, already a paved road was available around the laké Balaton with dust-free pavement upto Siófok. Documents were found on a timber bridge of (Sió)Fok from 1055. The names of Péterhida (1231), of Vetehida (1416) and of other settlements were given after their bridges. The first military survey revealed at least 390 bridges and culverts. A long (320 m) timber bridge stood in Barcs in 1683, in Siófok a 130 m long bridge could be found till 1893. Archive information on arched bridges survived from the 19 th century. In 1848, 67 timber bridges and 45 stone or brick bridges stood on the major roads. In 1940, 40 % of the stock (101 bridges) were of arched structure. 65 of them were still in operation in 1963. Presently 13 old arches can be found on the national road network, two bridges are under monument protection. Irón and steel railway bridges were constructed rather early: a multiple trussed bridge of 25 m span at Siófok built in 1861, a bridge of similar structure at Barcs at 1885; a bridge of sickle form with 3x95 m river spans at Gyékényes in 1891 (János Feketeházy's ingenious structure); an ingót irón highway Dráva-bridge of segment shape with 4x70 m spans at Barcs in 1903. The fourth welded bridge in Europe was built at Balatonszemes in 1931 as a pedestrian bridge above railway with 23.7 m span. This pioneer structure is still under traffic in Pécs. The construction of reinforced concrete bridges started with bridges of Wünsch-system in 1892. Dr. Szilárd Zielinski, the founder of Hungárián reinforced concrete bridge construction designed the six-span pedestrian bridge in Balatonföldvár harbour which proves evén today the high levél of engineering knowledge somé 100 years ago. The Sióbridge at Siójut built in 1926 should alsó be mentioned which was considered as an internationally remarkable structure at the time of its construction (it is still under traffic after widening and strengthening). In 1928, an intensive road and bridge construction campaign started. It can alsó be proved by the fact that 52 bridges built before 1945 still stand on the national highway network. During the World War II, 81 bridges were destroyed in county Somogy. The reconstruction was carried out in somé cases using tem163
