HIDÁSZ ALMANACH 2005 Beharangozok IABSE Annual Meetings - Budapest 12-15 September 2006 Organized by IABSE Hungarian Group and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics Introduction by László Dunai, Chair of the Organizing Committee, György Farkas, Co-Chair of the Scientific Committee, Gábor Medvéd, Co-Chair of the Scientific Committee, Professor Gábor Medvéd passed away on August 8,2005. The Hungarian Group of IABSE and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics wish to invite the world's structural engineers to Budapest to discuss strategies and solutions for responding to tomorrow's challenges in structural engineering. Structural engineering has played an important role in the history of Hungary and this will be the first IABSE Symposium to be held in Budapest, "the pearl of the Danube". It is poised to play at least as important a role in its future. Hungary is a land where structures, particularly bridges, figure prominently in its history. Beginning first with floating and timber bridges, and later with forms in iron, steel, and concrete the art of bridge design and construction was learned and practiced. Situated at the crossroad of armies, Hungary's bridges have been destroyed and reconstructed, sometimes more than once. After the post-war reconstruction and a long period of adverse influence, Hungary returned to Europe, restoring its old commercial and cultural links. The task of tomorrow is not just to reconstruct, but to maintain and upgrade structures, so as to meet the challenges of the future.
