It is the first Hungarian national park dedicated to the protection of abiotic values, superficial land formations, and caves. The underground natural treasures, namely the caves of the Aggtelek Karst and the Slovak Karst were inscribed on the World Heritage List by the UNESCO in 1995. The primary task of the National Park is to explore, to protect, and to preserve the natural and cultural values, and to enhance ecotourism. One of the most endeared treasures in the National Park is the Baradla Cave, which is the biggest and the most magnificent cave in our country. Besides the free trails, we offer cave-tours, guided walks in the village, and special guided tours in the area of the National Park. An outstanding series of events takes place in 2000, the “Aggtelek-Jósvafő Folk and Art Festivals”. The Aggtelek National Park and the villages of Aggtelek and Jósvafő offer a unique experience of philharmonic and chamber music in the Baradla Cave and in local churches. Do not miss the kaleidoscope of events during the carnival, and the grape harvest season, and during the village days. The Eastern and Pentecostal Festivals will revive our folk traditions. You can be a participant in the handicraft and art camps. At the end of the series we bid a special farewell to the old year. We hope you will be our guest soon. Yours sincerely, Gábor Salamon Director
