Who comes to Eger and why? Beside taking a view of one of the most glorious spots of victory, many people come here to have a rest, to relax or come to spend their holidays. Some are interested in sports, others are allured by the famous red wine of Eger, the Bull’s Blood. The guests will find very many restaurants, country taverns and wine- cellars, all of them with a different character and choice, each offering the foods and specialities of the region. Very many prominant persons of musical life originate from Eger and they are very pleased to come back to their town of birth but also other artists coming from elsewhere are honoured to give a concert to the music fans visiting Eger and to the inhabitants of the town. But to get to know the town, its atmosphere, you must come here and discover things for yourselves. Where sould we begin with the acquaintance of this hospitable town? It might be the best to begin with the Castle that gave it its fame and which has become to symbol of Eger. Our first king, St. Stephan established the bishopric of Eger and had a cathedral built as well as a palace for the bishop, on the hill rising above the town. Due to the wealth of the bishopric, to the high education of the bishops of Eger, the Castle and the bishop’s palace were always important strategical and cultural centres, this of course depended on the stormy or peaceful periods of our history. <J2> 7
