WHY HUNGARY? WHY HUNGARY? WHY HUNGARY? Living Folk Art Natural by Nature Life-giving Waters Hungarian flavours Just о hundred kilometres from the capital, on the slopes of Hollókő, we discover the world of folk tales. The village, inhabited by the Palóc people, preserving its folk architecture, colourful national traditions, has been World Heritage since 198/. Those who enjoy the benefits of village tourism at Ł peasant houses throughout the country can discover a wealth of folk traditions, and the experts of the trade are ready to share the secrets of the embroidery of Sárköz or Kalocsa, the lace of Halas, the glazed ware of Mezőtúr or the black pottery of Nádudvar, or the handmade slippers of Szeged. The artists' town of the Danube Bend, Szentendre, is also famous for its preserved village, which accumulates and displays the characteristic architecture and folk art of villages from different regions, where visitors may partake in traditional programs of music, dancing, and craftsmanship from spring until autumn. One can learn the unique skills of Matyó embroidery in Mezőkövesd, and in the museums of onion growing in Makó, and the famous paprika seasoning in Szeged and Kalocsa. Nearly ten percent of the country is made up of nature reserves or national parks. Today village- and green tourism is very popular, there are excellent facilities in the Hungarian countryside for a holiday combined with bicycle trips, sports, recreational thermal baths. Remains of prehistoric man have been found in the caves of Bükk National Park, the largest stalactite and stalagmite cave system of Europe. The Baradla caves, a World Heritage site, awaits the adventurous visitors. The famous Hungarian studs of the Puszta are the centres of horse breeding. Hungary is rich in water. Our great rivers attract visitors for canoe trips and fishing. The several hundred medicinal spas are truly a special experience, the baths and springs of Budapest, Gyula, and Bükfürdő, where there is an 18-hole golf course next to the line of quality hotels. The aerated medicinal springs of Balatonfüred have made the town a mecca for patients of heart disease for centuries. The Hungarian sea, Lake Balaton, is the largest lake in central Europe, which is an ideal holiday resort for families with children, with its shallow water. The forests, fields, and riverbanks hold many surprises even for hunters, birdwatchers, and nature photographers. The favorite resort for powerboats and jet skiers is Lake Tisza. Lake velencei, Lake Fertő, and their surroundings are ideal places for birdwatching and cycling. The largest natural thermal lake of Europe, in Hévíz, with a water temperature of 25°C (77°F) even in winter, is called “Lake of Good Hope" by sufferers from rheumatoid arthritis. The fame of Hungarian cuisine lies in the harmony of simple dishes and peculiar tastes, and thanks to a modern spirit based on sound tradition, incorporating the cuisine of the neighbouring cultures; using the abundant supply of local fruits, vegetables, and spices; based on a plentiful The sugarcoated Dobos cake filled with chocolate, created by and named after the celebrated confectioner and gastronomer, Dobos, a hundred years ago. supply of game and fish, a uniquely Hungarian gastronomy was developed. No wonder our master chefs regularly bring back glittering prizes from international chef competitions. There are three words every foreigner knows of the distinct Hungarian foods and spices: paprika, goulash, and pörkölt. What we have to offer is of course much more varied. If paprika is the king of Hungarian cuisine, then sour cream is its queen. This royal couple seasons our soups and meat dishes and contributes to the glory of our light vegetable dishes, casseroles, and salads. Taste the Jókai bean soup, The sun's rays and the skill of our winegrowers have made the fiery sparkling, full-bodied, and light Hungarian wines world famous for centuries. FACTS AND FIGURES Representations of the Hungarian National Tourist Office named after the famous author, the pikeperch of Lake Balaton á la maison, or rabbit in brown sauce with breadcrumb balls, satisfaction guaranteed.
