I hough Heves County constitutes only a small portion of Hungary, our guests can find here everything that serves their holiday, relaxation and entertainment. The county lies in North-eastern Hungary, its border is a mere 55 kilometres from Budapest. In the north it is surrounded by the picturesque hillsides of the Mátra and Bükk Mountains, in the south it is bordered by the Tisza Lake, inviting for a cool swim. The cities and settlements of the county are not large, however, their various sights, historic monuments and multicoloured programmes attract crowds of visitors year after year. Eger is the largest settlement of the region, as well as the cultural and business centre of the area. With its long and glorious historical past, valuable historical monuments and rich selection of sights, this over-1,000-year old small town is one of the most beautiful Baroque towns of Hungary. Eger is usually regarded as a historical and a Baroque town, as well as the town of wine, curative and thermal waters, and students. Eger is deservedly considered historical, as it was a bishop’s seat as early as the 11th century, during the reign of Saint Stephen, the first Hungarian king. The storms of history did not avoid the city: although during the Tartar invasion it was almost completely destroyed, its stone castle, built in the 13th century, played a highly significant defense function during the Turkish wars. In 1552 Captain Dobó István and his handful of men withstood the attacks of the close to 20-times stronger Turkish Army for over a month. The appearance of Eger - the city of Baroque - is also dominated by Baroque architecture. In the 18th century the town was a significant cultural and arts centre. Some 170 outstanding pieces of the architecture of past years have survived almost intact, in their original beauty. These include buildings of times past, for instance the fortress, the Basilica, and several churches, as well as wrought-iron gates, frescoes, and treasures of the museums and libraries. The city and its surroundings are famous wine-growing areas. The residents have been working in grape- and wine-production for several hundred years, EGER
