imf Dear Visitors, 9 would like to welcome you when holding the brochure of our town in hand, Gyöngyös and its surroundings, the settlements of the Mátra and the ‘Mátraalja ’ (foot of the Mátra). Our vicinity offers a wide range of programmes to our visitors this year, as well. Our museums and exhibitions show our town’s cultural traditions and values. One of the most valuable is the Monumental Library of the Franciscans, which represents the European education of the printing’s age with its incunabula. In the House of the Saint Crown a unique church treasury can be found. The curiosity of the collection is that each piece was ordered, made and used in the town. The revitalization of the garden and the Orczy Mansion, which accommodates the famous Mátra Museum, has been started. After finishing the monumental reconstruction work the new exhibitions of the museum can presumably be visited first in the second quarter of 2007. Our cultural programmes organized open-air between May and September gives the real opportunity to make our traditions well- known. I would like to recommend you some of them such as the wine-programmes in May, starting on 6th May in Nagyréde with ‘the Day of Open Cellars’, continuing with the international Marching- and Drinking Song festival in Abasár on 13- 14'h May and the 'Wine Days in Gyöngyös’ on 19-23rd May and closing with the ‘Celebration ^ of Wine on St. Orbán ’s Day in Kisnána ’ on 2Th May. The ‘Gyöngy’ International folk dance festival will be organized for the sixth time this year, to which 10-12 foreign folk dance groups are invited. During this programme series the young resounded through our town and the one who stays in town this time can experience a real festival feeling. Vintage programmes have had traditions in our town and in the surrounding settlements for ages. The celebrations start in Nagyréde on 26-27th August, continue in Domoszló on 2nd September with the procession and the 'Outlaws’ Rendezvous’, the ‘Vinatge in Solymos’ on 9-10'h September in Gyöngyössolymos and close with the ‘Vintage Festival in Gyöngyös’, which is the most monumental vintage programme in the area, on 15-IT1’ September. We invite you to this friendly area where you can find the beauty of the nature, the folk traditions and different kinds of activities for spending leisure time from hunting to hiking.
