Helmut Kolouch ( Austria) Why deny it? One’s knowledge and memory is put to a severe trial if the task is to write about the record of successes that the Austrian driving sport has scored. Austrian drivers do not belong to the lead in that field and particularly not is four-in-hand: it is two-in-hand rather that is a way of life. In recent years, however, something has been done in the four-in-hand line too, with so much success that Austria Iras now entered four carriages for 1984 year's World Championships in Hungary. Kolouch, an engineer and a leading executive of Philips, drives Hungarian horses, with Hungarian harness. He learned the fundamentals of four-in-hand driving from the best Hungarians, and he looks upon them as on examples to follow. He took part in 1978 in the Championship in Kecskemét, which was his first Worlds. He was eliminated in obstacle driving because he had taken the wrong course. With an elegant raising of his hat he signalled that he realized he had something to learn, to improve. Now there’s the chance to prove himself again. And a fairly good chance too. considering that at the competition in Windsor in May 1984. he vas not among the eliminated at all: he finished twelfth, which clearly shows his bettering performance. Emil-Bernhard Jung (USA) In 1978 Jung made up his mind and went over to live, in one of the largest states of the US, Virginia. Today be is considered the number-one in four-in-hand in the United States. As a member of the team of the Federal Republic of Germany, he won a silver medal in the individual events in Apeldoorn in 1978. Following his transition, there was for a long time silence about him. He vanished for a time, to reappear in Windsor in 1980, — without carriage, but as a „prompter” for the Us team. 1982 saw him again on the box in Apeldoorn, but no luck accompanied his debu- te. At the third obstacle he gave up, raising his cap before the tens of thousands of onlookers.. . All that may be more than just a hint that Jung is preparing a comeback at Szilvásvárad this year, to prove he is not that easily to be written off the list of the well- established names in the international lead. 8
