Eger, the venue of the Conference Eger, one of Hungary’s most ancient towns is situated about 130 kilometres to the north of Budapest, the capital of Hungary. It is the foot of the Bükk mountains, in picturesque surroundings. The town, which extends along a lengthy valley, is surrounded bv hills covered with vineyards. The region is famous for its grapes and fiery wines. Over one thousand years ago, this region provided a home for the first Magyars, and indeed, according to archaeological finds, the many caves within the town and in the surrounding region served as shelters for Ancient Man. In the 11th century, King Stephen 1, who founded the Hungarian state, established the first episcopacy here and this fact had an impact on the whole history of Eger. In the Middle Ages, Eger played a significant role as a trading centre. As from the 15th century, the town underwent rapid develop­ment. Eger Castle, the scene of many battles, one of the prides of Hungary’s national past, recalls the heroic firmness of the nation in the 16th century. In 1552, the Turkish army which swept through Europe—with victories one after the other—arrived at Eger Castle. It was defended only by a handful of Hungarians, under the leadership of Captain István Dobó. The firm stand of the Eger heroes proved that strength and determination by those who love their native country, are capable of defying superiority.
