Institutions and organisations Riksbibliotektjenesten (The National Office for Research and Special Libraries) is an independent bureau subordinate to the Ministry of Education, Research and Church Affairs. It is a consultative and coor­dinating authority and is an expert advisor to the Government in all matters concerning academic and special libraries. Statens bibliotektilsyn (The Norwegian Directorate for Public and School Libraries) is a directorate subordinate to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, with special responsibility for matters concerning public and school libraries. According to the Public Library Act, the Directorate shall act as a coordinating and initiating body, working for development and strengthening of the public libraries by profes­sional advice and consultance. The directorate is also a consultant and advisory body to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. Statens bibliotek- og informasjonshogskole (The Norwegian School of Library and Information Science) is so far the only institution educating librarians in Norway. The school educates professional per­sonell for all kinds of libraries. Studies of one, three and five years are offered. The one year study leads to a lower exam in library and infor­mation science, three years of study to a librarian’s degree, five years of study to a master’s degree in information and EDP. The one year study is also offered on distance basis. In addition the school offers a number of different courses and seminars on various levels, ranging from continuing education of one week to advanced courses of half a year with a final exam. The school has its own research and consulta­tive departement, BRODD. А/L Bibioteksentralen (The Norwegian Library Bureau) is a co-operative society owned by the municipalities, Kommunenes Sentralforbund (The Norwegian Association of Local Authorities) and Norsk Bibliotekforening (The Norwegian Library Association). A/L Biblioteksentralen is serving libraries throughout the country by offer­ing, selling and binding books. It provides library, bibliographic and computer-based services, materials and fixtures. Norsk bibliotekforening (The Norwegian Library Association) is a free independent national union working to strenghten the field in library, information and documentation questions. The aim is to spread knowledge and add competence, culture and information. Persons or institutions whose interests or activities correspond with those of the Association, can be members. The members of the Association are divided into regional departments and special groups. The national conference is the primary authority. NBF is publishing the periodical Internkontakt, in addition to distribution of other libra­ry-related literature and periodicals.
