PÁRÁD It is one of the best known and visited East Hungarian tourists destinations, a holiday resort on the north shelvings of the Mátra mountain, which is the geographic centre of the Palóc ethnographic group. The centre of the village is in the valley of river Tama. There are two smaller villages belonging to Párád, Parádfürdő and Parádóhuta, both located in the heart of the woods. It was the centre of the princely Rákóczi dynasty in the Middle Ages, and the manorial centre of the Károlyi counts in the modern times. The village began to grow, when Ferenc Rákóczi II. had a glass-house built in 1708. Párád possesses remarkable thermal water resources and has a lot of medicinal water springs. Two of the best known are the sulphur » spring "Csevice" and the chalybeate-spring, which is used for therapeutical purposes since 1813. The curative water is suitable for treating gynaecological problems, and as a drinking cure, for treating intestines and stomach-complaints. The village is situated in a varied area with a clean climate. The surrounding forests abound with botanic curiosities. There are a lot of tourists sights and attractions: relics of Palóc folk-architecture, living old folk-professions, horsemanship traditions. In the Károlyi times a manorial stable was built, it is name is "Cifra-istálló” (Fancy-stable). There are a stud-farm and a Coach-museum with interesting sights related to horsemanship and teams of horses. At feast occasions it is possible to examine the Palóc culture, traditional music, dances, personal belongings, national costume and customes. The "Palóc Days" are held in every two or three years since 1960, sometimes in the neighbouring Nógrád county. In 1993 it will be the 8th occasion that a colourful program of "Palóc Days" will be offered to our guests.
