A SHORT BIOGRAPHY János Kass was born at Szeged in 1927. He was twice awarded the Munkácsy Prize (1954, 1967). He finished his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1951. Since then he has been an active artist and taken part in exhibitions both in Hungary and abroad. He was obtai­ning the Derkovits Scholarship between 1956 and 1959. In 1960 and 1961 he was a candi­date at State Academy of Graphic Arts and Book Production of Leipzig. His works of book art and illustration are very important. He is the art editor of Új írás, a literary monthly. He is a teacher at the Department of Typography, Academy of Applied Arts. At the Brussels World Exhibition (1958), he won the silver medal for his panneaus and he was the gold medalist with the prize ,,rL'he World’s most Beautiful Book” at the Book Art Exhibition at Leipzig in 1966. He had two one-man shows in 1967 and 1973 in Budapest. His main works: illustrations for The Tra­gedy of Man and for Moses by Imre Madách.
